“Meow?”

“I know, Samson. You got chased by the mean doggie ghost, but you know you loved it. You had fun running around the house, didn’t you?”

After a momentary hesitation, he gave her a grudgingly staccato mewl. He might not want to admit it, but that was probably the most fun he’d had in weeks.

“Come on, buddy. You used to love running around, chasing things, being chased. It was fun for you. Wasn’t that fun today?”

“Mrrrowl.”

It was hard to tell, but that certainly didn’t sound like a yes. It actually sounded kind of sarcastic.

She wanted Samson with her if she was going to the graveyard again. Nothing happened to her the last time she was there, but it was a graveyard on a haunted house. Plus, now she knew there were other ghosts here besides Lucky the dog. There was no way of knowing what else might be there this time. Samson was her protector, sort of. At least she wouldn’t be alone this time.

“This story better be worth it,” she mumbled. “I’m already well beyond the bounds of sanity. If I find something in the graveyard…”

She shook her head, and picked her way carefully through the sunlight-dappled woods. The path to the graveyard was familiar now, even if it had faded with disuse over the years. Soon enough the little clearing appeared, with its scattering of short rectangular stones that marked graves from the past. Last time, she’d only scanned over the names but now, she set Samson’s crate down and started snapping pictures of each one. Maybe with a little research she could find out the secrets buried here for herself. The Heathcliffs were well represented here, but there were others as well.

She couldn’t help wondering if one of these graves belonged to the ghost of the woman she had seen in Victor Pellion’s bedroom.

There were fourteen graves in all. Some of them were too worn to read but she took pictures of them anyway. Later, she’d start a catalogue of photos and notes for this story. Her home printer was only black and white, but it served its purpose.

When she was done, there was nothing that stood out to her. Just names, and old stones. She bit her lip and looked around. Maybe she was wrong. Maybe Madison Grace really was just being metaphorical when she talked about buried secrets. Maybe these really were just graves. The secrets Victor Pellion had kept might really be in that secret panel in his bedroom after all.

Of course, to find out for sure, she would have to dig up each of these graves one at a time. Her stomach started folding over sickly on itself at just the thought of it. She wasn’t going to become a graverobber. She didn’t care how interesting the story was.

“Looks like a dead end, Samson.”

She winced as the words came out. Maybe she shouldn’t use phrases like ‘dead end’ when she was standing in the middle of a family graveyard, on the grounds of a haunted house.
